The No-Naked-Carb Rule

Let's talk about carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are not something you need to fear or eliminate. They provide energy and are an important part of a balanced eating pattern.

But one simple strategy we often teach at 225 Dietitians is:

Don't eat your carbs naked.

In other words, pair carbohydrates with protein, produce, and/or healthy fats.

What does that look like?

Instead of:

Crackers by themselves

Try:

Crackers + cheese + vegetables

Instead of:

A banana by itself

Try:

Banana + peanut butter or Greek yogurt

Instead of:

Toast by itself

Try:

Toast + eggs + berries

Instead of:

Chips by themselves

Try:

Chips + turkey roll-ups + vegetables

Pairing foods together can create a more satisfying eating experience and provide a wider variety of nutrients.

Carbohydrates belong on your plate

Rice, potatoes, oats, fruit, pasta, bread, beans, and other carbohydrate foods can all fit into a balanced diet.

The goal isn't to remove carbohydrates. It's to build balanced meals around them.

Your 225 Tip

The next time you reach for a carbohydrate-based snack, ask:

“What can I pair with this?”

A little protein, produce, or healthy fat can turn a quick carbohydrate into a more balanced snack.
