Build a Balanced Plate

When it comes to healthy eating, it’s easy to get caught up in what you shouldn’t eat. At 225 Dietitians, we prefer to focus on what you can add to your plate.

One of the simplest ways to create a balanced meal is to think about three things:

  • ½ your plate: vegetables and/or fruit

  • ¼ your plate: protein

  • ¼ your plate: whole-food starch or carbohydrate

This combination provides a mix of fiber, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients your body needs.

Why balance matters

Protein helps with satisfaction and supports muscle and tissue repair. Produce provides fiber and a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Carbohydrates provide your body with energy—especially when paired with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

And remember: a balanced plate doesn't have to look perfect every time.

Sometimes your meal may be a sandwich and fruit. Sometimes it's a bowl of pasta with chicken and vegetables. Sometimes it's leftovers eaten straight from the container!

Try this

At your next meal, take a quick look at your plate and ask:

Where's my protein? Where's my produce? Where's my carbohydrate?

If one is missing, think about what you could add rather than what you need to eliminate.

Your 225 Tip

Don't overcomplicate it. A rotisserie chicken + microwaveable brown rice + frozen vegetables can become a balanced meal in minutes.

Healthy eating is about building a foundation you can actually maintain—not creating a perfect plate every time.
